The hands-free card first came out in 2001, on the Laguna II saloon. This car was conceived as the ideal lifestyle car of the 21st Century. However, despite a comprehensive design brief based on more than 6,000 customer interviews looking at their lifestyles, habits, and programmer expectations, Renault ran out of time to create prototypes and test all possible scenarios for use.

Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in an hotel at the time and was using his room key to open his car. He thought that the car key could be created using the same magnetic strip that was used to make the key.

In the years to come the card was hailed as an invention that revolutionized the world and is now found on two of three renault key replacement vehicles. While smartphones seem to be on the verge of replacing it, Renault has chosen to make use of these new features without letting the hands-free card slip to the side.

The keyless entry system

Renault's hands-free card was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was introduced twenty years ago. The exterior design is the same, but the technology has been upgraded to make it easier to use and more secure to hack.

It isn't able to be used from outside to unlock doors or start the car unless the driver is able to activate it. This is because radio signal antennae "around" the vehicle are programmed to detect whether the key is in or inside the car. The key can still function from a distance to turn on the ignition of your car, but it won't be able to unlock the doors, and that's to ensure your safety.

The wireless remote control transmissions used by the system use the rolling-code. This reduces the chance of security being compromised by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the threat completely. [1]
